finearts

Starting with carvings of architectural ornament and moving through stages of figurative pieces, influenced by the great stonecarvers of the Renaissance, my work now has become more focused on simpler forms suggested by animals such as the seal, whale, horse or cormorant.

I have also introduced elements inspired by Arctic Canadian Inuit sculpture, in particular the mermaid or sea goddess Sedna.

I love the free, direct carving of Inuit art, the opposite to my own training where one usually solves issues of form in the maquette prior to picking up hammer and chisel.

Animal forms such as the seal have such beautiful, fluid lines and suggest such agility and grace. Using stone, especially marble, to depict animal, or other natural forms, seems to me such a universal human function, as the evidence of so many civilisations convey.

The satisfaction this brings to me is all in the creative process itself. I hope that it brings equal pleasure to the viewer as well.
